RIP, John Hughes

Hughes' characters and stories mirrored our teen years. He captured our joy, angst, confusion and fragility in an authentic voice that treated us equally, whether jock, princess, misfit, geek, goth, or some combination of the above. For those of us in high school in the 80's, The Breakfast Club arrived during our most awkward years, assuring us that whichever of those labels people assigned, we were far more alike than different. I can't think of a better or more perfectly-timed story, more humorously told.

Dirty Projectors Show / Brooklyn

Couple of iPhone shots from the DPs. It was a beautiful Sunday on the waterfront in Williamsburg, with NYC as a backdrop. The Dirty Projectors are one of the most interesting bands I've seen in a long time. They're very layered, fusing different sounds and styles... electro-beats, funk, flutes, twangy guitars, horns. When you break it down elementally, it sounds like they would be somewhat busy and scattered. But in actuality, it all works quite beautifully.

Wilcohhh

Great show upstate in Wappingers Falls, NY, near a pretty river with a funny name: the "Fish Kill River". 2nd time I've seen them live, and they were fantastic both times. Highly recommend.

Heart is puddle.

Quite possibly the sweetest video (and lyrics) ever.

Straight outta Portland. Dig.

They're playing our song
They're playing our song
Can you see the lights?
Can you hear the hum?

Of our song
I hope they get it right
I hope we dance tonight
Before we, get it wrong

And the seasons
Will change us new
Be the best I've known
and you know me
I could not be stuck on you
If it were true

I was swimming
My eyes were dark
Til you woke me
And told me that opening
is just the start
(it was)

Now I see you,

til kingdom come
You're the one I want...
