They remind me why I write 20 pages, put them down, walk away, pick them up, rip them up and start all over. One's authentic voice is not always present in a first draft. And unlike advertising copywriting where I need to communicate the voice and tone of someone else (or their brand), my personal writing needs, more than anything, to speak from my heart, my voice, my gut. Just as a singer who doesn't sing from deep in their diaphragm sounds nasal-y and false, a writer who does not dig deep, who skates only on the surface, is merely a typist. Sometimes a witty documentarian. But not authentic. To be authentic one must stare down the tough stuff. Run towards it, not away. In order to process and understand. Not wallow in it. Just, not back away. Creative people (of all sorts) dissect their pain. They understand that obstacles, challenges and pain teach them as much or more about themselves as happiness ever could. If you don't dive deep, attempt to understand all sides of yourself, how can you value anything or anyone authentically? How do you see beyond the surface? You can still be a person who appreciates the light. I do. I'm just not afraid of the dark. Are you?

Today was a rare 70F day in November so we were eating brunch outside @ The Half King. They were shooting the new Matt Damon flick (The Adjustment Bureau) about 20 feet away from us. Although I have to admit I was most interested in the Porsche Pursuit vehicle they were filming with. It looks like the Darth Vader of autos. Über cool.

Hughes' characters and stories mirrored our teen years. He captured our joy, angst, confusion and fragility in an authentic voice that treated us equally, whether jock, princess, misfit, geek, goth, or some combination of the above. For those of us in high school in the 80's, The Breakfast Club arrived during our most awkward years, assuring us that whichever of those labels people assigned, we were far more alike than different. I can't think of a better or more perfectly-timed story, more humorously told.

It was a beautiful Sunday on the waterfront in Williamsburg, with NYC as a backdrop. The Dirty Projectors are one of the most interesting bands I've seen in a long time. They're very layered, fusing different sounds and styles... electro-beats, funk, flutes, twangy guitars, horns. When you break it down elementally, it sounds like they would be somewhat busy and scattered. But in actuality, it all works quite beautifully.
